TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - As many as 14 people were killed and 10 others injured during a gathering in a mosque in Nigxia, Northwest of China, as reported by news office Xinhua, Monday, January 6, 2014.
According to Xinhua, quoting local officials, the stampede occured at noon, around 1 PM, Sunday, January 5, 2014, during the time of a traditional gathering to pay respects to a recently deceased cleric. "The injured victims were brought straight to the hospital," Xinhua wrote quoting local officials.
Pictures that surfaced in various online news websites show a group of people, almost all of them wearing white robes, standing outside of the Green Mosque after the stampede incident. Clothing and shoes were also seen scattered on the ground.
To uncover the truth behind the incident on the Mosque in Xiji, around 320 kilometers northwest of Xi'an (the capital of the Shaanxi Province), security officials started to investigate. Ningxia is home to Chinese citizens of the Hui tribe (a minority tribe who are Muslims in majority). But they are different from the Muslim people of Uighur Xinjiang.
