TEMPO.CO, Torkham - At least three people died in an attack by Afghan rebel group Taliban, on US military base in Nangharhar Province yesterday.

"Militants numbered four or five armed with suicide jackets, rocket propelled grenades (RPG) and heavily weapons raided a coalition base in bordering town of Torkham in border area with Pakistan at earlyWednesday morning," a security force told Xinhua on conditions of anonymity.

One Afghan police and two assailants reportedly died and three police were injured from the attack that happened around 05.30 am.

Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman, claimed responsibility for the attack. Previously, on September 2, more than 40 trucks were destroyed and three militants died in a similar attack.

The uprising led by Taliban has been escalating since this militant group launched its attack last April on Afghan government troops. This caused NATO to station more than 84,000 soldiers to stand guard in Afghanistan.
