TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Singapore prosecutors charged 24 Indian nationals who were allegedly involved in the Sunday night riot in Little India. The men could face jail terms of seven years plus caning for rioting with deadly weapons.

The men, aged between 22 and 40 years old, are also accused of throwing concrete pieces at police officers, injuring 29 officers and damaging 25 vehicles. The suspects will be detained in the police compound for a week for further investigation.

Two Bangladeshis, an Indian and a Malaysian who were arrested after the riots were released after they were found not having been involved in the riot.

The incident started when a construction worker was hit by a bus at the junction of Race Course Road and Hampshire Road in the Little India district. Some 400 migrant workers from South Asia went violent; burning the bus even when the victim, Kumaravelu Sakthivel, 33, was still pinned under the bus.

The bus driver, a 55-year-old Singapore citizen, was released on bail after being charged for causing death by a negligent act.
