TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chris "the thin man" John, 18 times World Boxing Association (WBA) world champion, lost his prime sponsor for the upcoming match against South African Simpiwe Vetyeka, December 6. The promoter suspected that the event took place as an effect of the conflict between Indonesia-Australia, post the phone tapping allegation.
Golden Eagle Coffee decided to step out from the sponsorship on Monday, causing Chris John to have USD250,000 short. With the sponsor withdrawal, Chris John re-opened sponsor bidding worths US$100,000, closing on December 3 at 12:00 Perth time.
"I have spent years practicing in Australia and I was always welcomed here. I wish both nations can resolve the political conflict and return to cooperation," said Chris John in his official statement. Chris John is to face Vetyeka, December 6, in Perth, in a match to defend his featherweight title.
