TEMPO.CO, Palembang - As many as 562 becak (rickshaw) drivers and their coordinators marched to the National Sports Council (KONI) office in Palembang, coming to collect their payment when serving Islamic Solidarity Games III.
"We are here to collect what was promised to us," said Yudi Abdurrahman, one of the coordinators. He said that prior to ISG, several regional committee requested becak drivers for ISG dissemination. Moreover, the drivers were needed to also secure ISG guests from criminality.
General Secretary at South Sumatra KONI Maryama Bustam said he could not fulfill the requested amount of fee, saying they can only afford to pay for 200 drivers. The decision received a negative response from the flock of becak drivers, who decided to split the fee equally to all drivers. The drivers, in total, only earned Rp200,000 out of the promised Rp500,000 fees.
