TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Transportation Ministry plans to equip all provincial capitals with the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system at the end of 2014. According to the Transportation Ministry Spokesman Bambang Ervan, 15 capital cities are targeted to have BRT in 2013.
"Among them are Pekanbaru, Palembang, Bandung, Semarang and Jakarta," he said to Tempo on Monday, October 14.
Bambang said that there are 12 provincial capitals that are yet to develop the BRT system. He hoped urged repsective regional government to provide BRT as mandated by Law No. 22/2009 on Public Transportation.
Djoko Sasono, Director of City Transportation System Development at the Directorate General of Land Trasportation of the Transportation Ministry, admitted that the application of BRT is not an easy task because the project is too expensive to be allocated in the Regional Budget (APBD).
