Indonesia, China to Collaborate on Defense, Space Program

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Djoko Suyanto received Yang Jiechi, State Councilor of the People's Republic of China, on Thursday, September 19. The two men met at the Shangri-La Hotel in South Jakarta, to talk about the bilateral cooperation between China and Indonesia.
"One of them is the cooperation in national security and space programs," Djoko said after the meeting. In addition, he said, they also discussed economic cooperation which encompasses investment, infrastructure development, food security and energy.
Djoko said that Indonesia and China will support each other's defense industries. For the cooperation in space programs, Indonesia will push for the National Aeronautics and Space Institute to gain knowledge from China.
Yang Jiechi welcomed the plan to increase cooperation with Indonesia, saying that Indonesia is one of China's largest partner countries.
Djoko's meetings and Jiechi also talked about the planned visit of China's President China Xi Jinping in early October and discussed the preparations for the upcoming APEC Summit that is scheduled to take place in Nusa Dua Bali, from October 7 to 8.
