Yogya, Germany to Develop Green Hotels

TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - The Yogyakarta administration has collaborated with the German International Cooperation (GIZ) for a pilot "green hotel" program in Indonesia in 2014.

GIZ researchers, the Yogyakarta administration and major players in the hotel industry held a meeting at the Yogyakarta City Hall last Tuesday, September 10, to establish that the new environmentally friendly project will focus on the management of waste.

Franhover researcher and GIZ partner, Marius Mohr said that hotels usually employ conventional methods, specifically the aerob system, to manage their waste. The method, said Mohr, is costly and environmentally unfriendly.

Managing waste using the aerob system can result in the formation of micro-organisms, which can potentially be hazardous to human health.

GIZ regional project director Ruth Erlbeck previously announced that her organization would collaborate with a number of Yogyakarta hotels as the pilot for this green hotel program. Meanwhile, the hotels invited to work together to realize this program still must study the new environmentally friendly waste management system.
