TEMPO.CO, Washington - President Barack Obama said that the United States has provided an additional US$195 million in humanitarian and food aid to Syria. Obama is timing the new aid to coincide with Eid al-Fitr.
"Michelle and I send our warmest greetings to Moslems celebrating Eid-al-Fitr in the United States and around the world," Obama said in his message in regards of the Eid.
"Many of us have had the opportunity to break fast with our Moslem friends and colleagues – a tradition that reminds us to be grateful for our blessings and to show compassion for the less fortunate among us, including millions of Syrians who spent Ramadan displaced from their homes, their families, and their loved ones," Obama wrote.
With the latest aid, the U.S. has now spent more than US$1 billion in humanitarian aid since the Syrian civil war started two years ago.
The United Nations estimated that the death toll in Syria has reached more than 100,000 people, and the number of refugee has been more than 1,5 million people. More than 4 million people stay in Syria in poor condition.
