TEMPO.CO, Cairo - A year after his election, Egypt President Mohammad Mursi was overthrown in what his supporters called as military Coup d’état.
General Abdul Fatah al-Sisi from Egypt National Army announced Mursi's resignation and the election of Adli Mansour, the Head of Constitutional Court as temporary president until the next election.
"We will build a strong Egypt civilization that involves participations from all parties," said al-Sisi when announcing the news. Alongside General al-Sisi, some prominent public figures stood by to give support, like Al-Azhar’s scholars, Coptic Church representatives, Opposition Muhamad el-Baredei, Nour Islamic Party representatives, and the leader of Tamarod Movement that organzed Tahrir demonstration.
Remarking the announcement, fireworks and green laser was seen flashing in the sky of Tahrir square. Two and a half years ago, the same wave of protest saw the downfall of Dictator Husni Mubarak.
Essam Haddad, Mursi’s advisor, wrote in facebook that it was a military Coup d’état and he challenged Mursi’s oppositions to battle their way in the next election. However, some parties seemed to doubt if Egypt will have a legal election as Pro-Ikhwanul Muslimin group began to rally up support.
