Indonesian Student Won 1st Prize at Cyber Security Competition

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Firman Azhari, graduate student of School of Electrical Engineering and Informatics, Institut Teknologi Bandung, was crowned the champion of Cyber Security for the Next Generation, London. He invented a software capable of detecting the safety of Near Field Communication (NFC) payment cards.
The challenge was sponsored by the cyber security giant Kaspersky. According to Azhari's supervisor, Suhono Harso Supangkat, the competition's finals took place on June 25 to 27, 2013 at Royal Holloway, University of London. "14 participants from 10 countries who made it through the preliminaries competed in the finals," he said on Monday.
Last March, 23-year old Azhari was crowned the regional champion of Asia-Pacific in Singapore. The panel of judges in the grand final consisted of information security professionals and academicians from Delft University and Plymouth University, to name a few.
The software Azhari invented eases the application of NFC-based cards. Users only have to tap the card to the reader to finalize the transaction.
