TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U.S. Military is completing its special 4G wireless network and is also updating its manual. General Martin Dempsey, Chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff said that the new technology is used to decide how and when to use force against enemies.
"We are updating our rules of engagement—the first update for cyber in seven years," Dempsey said, adding that the technology is also used to control cyber forces.
"We have more work to do, but these important steps significantly strengthen our ability to defend the nation at network speed," he said in a speech delivered at the Brookings Institute in Washington, DC.
Dempsey, the highest-ranking military official in the US, said that the new technology was part of a broader overhaul of the Defense Department designed to bolster national cyber security. He cited that cyber attacks have risen 17-fold since 2011 although he did not specify the attacks to the Department of Defense.
Dempsey added the U.S. Department of Defense Department is investing US$23 billion over the next four years and he said that the Department would be consolidating all 15,000 of its networks into a cloud-based enterprise platform.
He further said that the Department was also working with 4G wireless network providers considered to be safe such as iPads, iPhones, and Android. "This phone would make both Batman and James Bond jealous," Dempsey said.
Earlier this year, the Defense Department earlier just approved Apple iOS devices, Samsung Galaxy S devices running Knox, and BlackBerry 10 to support the operation of the new defense technology.
