TEMPO.CO, Yangoon - Myanmar opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi has condemned the government of Myanmar’s for a policy in Rakhien state that applies a two-child limit on Rohingya Muslims.
"They shouldn't discriminate. This is against human rights," said Suu Kyi on Monday.
This has been Suu Kyi’s harshest criticism so far about sectarian violence against the Rohingya Muslims. As a Nobel Peace Prize winner, many have criticized her for not speaking up for the rights of the Rohingya. She even stayed silent after Muslims clashed with the Buddhists in Rakhine last year, killing around 192 people and causing 140,000 people to lose their homes.
Last week, a commission formed by the Myanmar government announced that Rohingya Muslims are only permitted to have two children in order to control their growth. This two-child policy was actually created in 1994, but only enforced last week.
"If they want to live here, they have to follow the rules and orders of this state," Win Myaing, spokesman for the Rakhine government, said yesterday.
This regulation has made Myanmar the only nation in the world to blatantly issue a discriminative law. Even the controversial one child policy in China was not aimed at any particular race.
