Minister Suswono : Food Production in 2012 has Increased

22 May 2013 19:31 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Minister of Agriculture Suswono said that the production of almost all food commodities in Indonesia has increased in 2012. "Production-wise, 2012 brought a satisfactory achievement," said Suswono in a speech during the opening of a coordination meeting for counseling agency leaders in Cisarua, Bogor, on Tuesday, May 21.

Suswono said that based on the temporary figures reported by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), last year's rice production reached 69.04 million tons, 5 percent higher than 2011. Corn production also increased by 9.8 percent or up to 19.4 million tons in 2012. Meanwhile, soy bean production experienced a minor 0.11 percent increase to 852,000 tons in 2012.

Suswono added that sugar production rose by 16.34 percent from 2.11 million tons in 2011 to 2.59 million tons in 2012. "Although sufficient for household consumption, sugar production was insufficient to meet industrial demands," Suswono explained.
