TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The development and expansion of airports in a few regions has been obstructed due to issues with land acquisition. In Banjarmasin, South Kalimantan, the development of Syamsudin Noor Airport has been postponed for one year and six months due to disputes over land acquisition.
Angkasa Pura I president director, Tommy Soetomo, says the local community refused to let go of their property despite the fact that they will be given a compensation fee that is higher than the region’s standards.
Angkasa Pura intends to develop an airport on new land reaching 100 hectares. Currently, it only managed to acquire 64 hectares of land. Tommy stated that the airport could no longer accommodate more than 4 million passengers per year because the airport only has a current capacity of one million passengers per year.
Former secretary to the minister of state-owned enterprises, Said Didu, stated that this obstacle was mainly due to the local community’s refusal to give up their land. This is despite the fact that the development of the airport is necessary to encourage the growth of the economy. Infrastructure is one of the supporters of growth.
