TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - China seems to have great interest in Antarctica. The country is now planning to build two new research stations in the continent by 2015. The two new stations will complement the three already existing stations, namely the Zhongshan, Great Wall and Kunlun stations.
As reported by Xinhua news agency website, an expedition team from the State Oceanic Administration (SOA) has returned from Antarctica in order to check the location of the stations’ construction site.
The first station that the Chinese government will build is the summer research station, for the purpose of conducting research in December until March. This station will be built between the existing Zhongshan and Kunlun stations which serve logistical support.
"The station will be used to study geology, glaciers, geo-magnetism, and atmospheric science in Antarctica," said a SOA official.
The second station will be built in Victoria Land, Antarctica. This station is designed to support scientists conducting multidisciplinary research on bio-ecology and remote sensing satellites.
