TEMPO.CO, Jerusalemn - Israeli police detained senior Palestinian Muslim Mufti on Wednesday, after they raided his residence in Jerusalem.
Palestinian news agency, Wafa, reported Palestinian Mufti, Muhammad Hussein, was brought to police station due to his alleged involvement in a chaos that took place at al-Aqsa Mosque in the Holy City of Jerusalem.
"He was interrogated on suspicion of involvement in a disturbance yesterday (Tuesday) at Temple Mount," said police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld to the press.
"Some chairs were thrown at a group of Jews at Temple Mount," he told AFP.
Hussein was brought to the police station on the day commemorated as Jerusalem Day, Israeli’s celebration for the reunification of several cities in the east sector of Arab regions after they won the Six-Day War in 1967. Israel later annexed East Jerusalem, which was not recognized by the international community.
Thousands of Israelis marched and rallied along the city to celebrate the day. "Thousands of police were being deployed in and around Jerusalem and the Old City in preparation for the annual event," Rosenfeld concluded.
