TEMPO.CO, Mexico City – The Mexican Federal Police arrested Ines Coronel Barreras, the father-in-law of notorious drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, one of Mexico's most wanted person. Barreras was captured in the northern city limit without significant resistance.
"Ines Coronel Barreras, 45, was detained in Agua Prieta, across the border from Douglas, Arizona, along with his 25-year-old son and three other men," Mexico's Interior Deputy Secretary Eduardo Sanchez said on Tuesday, April 30.
Sanchez said officers arrested Coronel at a warehouse. In the arrest, four automatic rifles, a handgun and more than 250kg of marijuana were seized.
The United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) said that Coronel is one of the key operators in the Sinaloa drug cartel, led by Guzman.
"Coronel will be charged for smuggling Marijuana for Sinaloa trough the Mexico–Arizona border," Sanchez added.
He also said that the Mexican authority has been collecting intelligence on Coronel since January 2013, around the same time when the US Treasury Department levied a financial sanction on him.
