TEMPO.CO, Carolina – A recent research in South Carolina, US, mentioned that skin cancer may lead to other types of cancer. The research discovered that women with non-melanoma skin cancer a 26 percent higher risk to develop other types of cancer. The number reaches up to 15 percent in men.
The research involved 150,000 participants, and has been going for more than 20 years. Anthony Alberg, epidemiology professor from Medical University of South Carolina said "This discovery shows a relation between skin cancer and the development other cancer."
Previously, a research conducted in 2006 showed that non-melanoma skin cancer is a very common type of cancer. There are around 2.1 million cases of non-melanoma skin cancer in the US alone.
"The research can help researchers to understand cancer biology," said Alberg.
The research led showed that a patient with non-melanoma skin cancer has a higher risk to develop deadly melanoma cancer. Non-melanoma skin cancer can be caused by sun light exposure, however, how non-melanoma cancer can cause other types of cancer is still unknown.
