16 Geothermal Spots in Indonesia Untapped

TEMPO.CO, Makassar - South Sulawesi's department of energy and mineral resources says that 16 geothermal spots in the province have not been used as power sources. Overall, South Sulawesi is estimated to have 391 megawatts (MW) of electricity potential.
"We are constrained by funding," Nataniel C.J. Tappi, researcher of geology and mineral resources, told Tempo on Tuesday, April 16.
Nataniel said that investors are less attracted to work on geothermal projects as they are considered a renewable type of energy. He said he hopes that private firms will be more involved in exploring geothermal potential to increase South Sulawesi's electricity potential.
Nathaniel added that Indonesia has 265 geothermal areas, of which only seven have been exploited: five in Java and two outside Java. The areas are Sibayak in North Sumatra with a capacity of 12 MW; Mount Salak (375 M), Kamojang (200 MW), Darajat (255 MW), and Wayang Windu (227 MW) in West Java; Dieng in Central Java (60 MW) and Lahendong in North Sulawesi (60 MW). The total capacity amounts to 1,189 MW.
