  • TEMPO Interactive, Stockholm, Sweden: The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI), a Swedish research institution on weapon issues, said China is now the fifth-largest exporter of conventional weapons in the world, replacing the UK. In its press release, Monday, March 18, SIPRI said this is the first time China has been included on the list since the Cold War ended. The five biggest suppliers in 2008-2012 are the United States (30 percent), Russia (26 percent), Germany (7 percent), France (6 percent), and China (5 percent). This is the first time the UK was not included on the top 5 list since 1950, replaced by China.Overall, the volume of international conventional arms trade grew by 17 percent between 2003-2007 and 2008-2012.China's volume of conventional weapons exports jumped 162 percent between 2003-2007 and 2008-2012, while its market share increased from 2 percent to 5 percent."The rise in China's exports was mainly driven by the large-scale arms purchase by Pakistan," said Dr Paul Holtom, director of SIPRI Arms Transfers Program.ABDUL MANAN
