TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan, had decided to appoint a general from Singapore to command the UN Peacekeeping Force in East Timor, that will work in cooperation with the UN Mission of Support in East Timor (UNMISET). In the letter sent to the President of the Security Council that was published today (1/8), Kofi Annan said he would appoint Major General Tan Huck Gim as a commander of the UNMISET, starting on August 31. Major General Tan will replace Lt. General Winai Phattiyakul from Thailand whose term ends on August 30. Meanwhile, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reported today its readiness to evaluate a request of asylum that could possibly be filed by passengers of a Sri Lanka ship if they are permitted to enter the country and want to stay in the new country. The ship with 56 passengers moored at the port in Dili, East Timor, last Sunday. (D.A Candraningrum – TNR)
