Turkey Uncovered: Top 5 Places to Visit in Ankara

1. Anitkabir

The first iconic landmark in Ankara is Anitkabir, the grand mausoleum honoring modern-day Turkey’s founder Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Located on a hill, the complex includes a vast plaza, ceremonial halls, and a museum. While exploring its intricate architecture, visitors can learn about Atatürk’s pivotal legacy in shaping the Turkish Republic. 

2. Temple of Augustus and Rome

The Roman Temple of Augustus, also known as the Monumentum Ancyranum, is an important historical site dating back to the Roman era. The temple is well-preserved, has inscriptions detailing the triumphs of Emperor Augustus, and provides valuable insight into Ankara’s ancient past. 

3. Ankara Castle

Perched on a hilltop, Ankara Castle offers dazzling views of Ankara city. This historic fortress has witnessed numerous changes over the centuries, all the way to its Byzantine origins. Exploring the castle’s walls and towers allows visitors to imagine a different life while enjoying the spectacular views of Ankara’s skyline and surrounding landscape.

4. Museum of Anatolian Civilizations

The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations is home to artifacts from Turkey’s diverse history.  Standing in a beautifully restored Ottoman building, this museum offers exhibits dating from the prehistoric era to the Byzantine. Some of the museum’s highlights include artifacts from the Hittite, Phrygian, and Urartian civilizations. This museum is perfect for history enthusiasts.

5. Atatürk Forest Farm and Zoo

If you’re seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of Ankara, Atatürk Forest Farm and Zoo offers a peaceful retreat. The sprawling complex features lush gardens, a zoo, and traditional Turkish agricultural practices.
