Ahok Says PDIP Struggles to Nominate Anies Baswedan in Jakarta Election

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Basuki Tjahaja Purnama alias Ahok, the Chairman of the Central Executive Board of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP), has indicated that the party is unlikely to nominate Anies Baswedan for the 2024 Jakarta gubernatorial election. He alluded to a party status since PDIP is considering nominating internal candidates.
Ahok emphasized the party’s preference for fielding its own cadre for the position, and that figures from outside the party will only be considered if no suitable internal candidates emerged.
Anies is a politician with a non-party background despite having participated in the regional elections and presidential elections.
“I believe that outsiders can only be considered if we don't have suitable cadres,” said Ahok at the PDIP DPP Office in Menteng, Central Jakarta on Wednesday, August 14, 2024.
Ahok stressed that PDIP has its own training and development for the party members. Although it is not impossible for his party to nominate Anies, he said that this possibility would be difficult to realize if PDIP has internal candidates. “PDIP typically promotes from within,” he explained.
Recently, issues concerning attempts to block Anies from running in the upcoming Jakarta election have emerged following the formation of the Advanced Indonesia Coalition Plus (KIM Plus) that will endorse Ridwan Kamil.
Anies’ supporters have visited the PDIP headquarters to express their desire for the party to nominate Anies as the Jakarta gubernatorial candidate. The group, known as the Poros Jakarta, met with PDIP DPD chairman Djarot Syaiful Hidayat on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, to formally propose their support for Anies.
“We believe there is a possibility for a partnership between the people of Jakarta and the PDIP to together support Anies Baswedan in the upcoming Jakarta election and avoid competing against an empty slate,” said Biem Triani Benjamin, a representative of the Poros Jakarta.
