TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Long flights can run from eight to a grueling sixteen hours. Travelers must get ready to spend some time in a cramped space with little rest. Long flights will always be uncomfortable unless travelers know some tips to get cozy during the flight.
Citing Travel + Leisure, an Air India air hostess shared some of her best tips to stay comfortable during long-haul flights.
1. Wear the right outfit
Wear an outfit you trust to protect yourself from hours of blasting AC and limited movement. Layer up if you get cold, and stay cozy with soft warmers and shawls. "In my opinion, the best attire for a long haul has got to be something loose and comfortable, like a sweatshirt and track pants," the air hostess said, as quoted from Travel + Leisure on Sunday, August 11, 2024.
2. Get some sleep
The simplest and most useful pastime for travelers during a long flight is catching up on some sleep. Order a soothing warm beverage before you snooze and don’t forget your thin blanket and soft neck pillow.
3. Picking the right seat
For long-haul flights, don't hesitate to spend some extra money and prioritize comfort. For extra legroom, opt for exit-row seats. For easy access to the lavatory, pick the aisle seat.
"I’d surely recommend a seat with extra legroom like the first rows of a cabin. Though these seats have an extra charge, it’s advisable to spend a little more as opposed to being uncomfortable later. These seats also allow ease of movement, and you don’t even have to trouble your fellow passengers to get out or go back in. It’s a win-win," said the air hostess.
4. Move around on your seat
Moving around and stretching on your seat every two hours is recommended to prevent the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
"It’s always a good idea to move around in the cabin, barring the time of service. Not only will it help counter stiffness, but also improve circulation and prevent varicose," she added.
5. Don't forget skincare
The longer the flight, the drier your skin will be. Being at a high altitude for long periods can sap the moisture of your skin. “Dryness is common on long-hauls. So, it’s always a good idea to carry a hydrating facial mist with a good SPF. In addition to providing the necessary moisturization, it will protect it from harmful radiation. Similarly, carry a hydrating lip balm with SPF,” she said.
6. Flying at night with kids
If you’re traveling with kids, it’s recommended to take a night flight so it coincides with their bedtime. Don’t forget to pack an inflatable footrest to ensure they can stretch their legs comfortably, and an eye mask, earplugs, and a soft blanket to help them sleep better. "To keep them occupied and entertained, you can carry sketchbooks and colors or even some puzzles," says the air hostess.
7. Practice courtesy
For cabin crew, long flights mean longer working hours. Always be kind and extend courtesy and gratitude whenever you get the chance.
"Always treat others the way you want to be treated," she concluded.
