TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Shopee Indonesia has denied rumors circulating on social media X that the online marketplace company will conduct massive layoffs.
Head of Public Affairs Shopee Indonesia Radynal Nataprawira said his company is not conducting layoffs, but rather transferring employees for customer service positions to Solo and Yogyakarta. "Some team members are willing to be relocated," Radynal said in a written statement received by Tempo on Saturday, August 3, 2024.
Regarding the relocation policy, Radynal said that several employees were unwilling to be relocated to the two cities. However, he did not specify the number. He said the employees who refused to move were not fired but chose to resign.
"For other team members who do not continue the relocation, we will ensure that they receive support in accordance with their rights and applicable government regulations, as well as other support facilities such as insurance for the next three months," he said.
Radynal explained that the transfer of employees to Yogyakarta and Solo has been Shopee's program for the past year. This is based on the readiness of facilities and the development of human resources in the city. He claimed that the policy was Shopee's effort to create equal employment opportunities.
"With operational offices spread across several regions, Shopee hopes to contribute to the creation of a digital talent development ecosystem, while providing employment opportunities in the regions," he said.
The relocation of Shopee employees to Yogyakarta and Solo is reportedly an effort to reduce the company's expenses on employee salaries. Tempo sent a written question to Shopee Indonesia's Corporate Affairs Media Relations on the matter but did not receive a response.
