Industry Ministry Backs Trade Ministry's Plan to Form Task Force Against Illegal Imports

11 July 2024 11:12 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ministry of Industry supports the Ministry of Commerce's plan to form a task force to eradicate illegal imports. The task force was formed based on reports from industry players about the ailing textile business.

Reni Yanita, the Industry Ministry's acting director general for chemical, pharmaceutical and textile industries, hopes the task force to eradicate illegal imports will work effectively. "I hope it will be serious and there will be a report every week," she said at the parliament complex in Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

Reni said there had been no discussion between the two ministries about plans to form the task force.

She reminded the Trade Ministry to implement the plan immediately. Some time ago, she said, the government had formed an anti-thrifting task force that included the Ministry of Industry. But the task force's work stopped midway.

Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan said he would form a task force to eradicate illegal exports after several industry associations visited his office on Monday, July 8. The Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo) and the Association of Indonesian Retailers and Shopping Center Tenants (Hippindo), among others, reported widespread illegal imports that were harming domestic industry.

"We will invite lawmakers from the DPR and consumer institutions to inspect the market," Zulhas said during a meeting at the parliament complex on Monday.

Zulhas said the illegal imports in question were products that did not have Indonesian National Standard (SNI) documents. For example, he said, there are imported T-shirts that have an import duty of Rp50,000 to Rp60,000. However, the T-shirts are sold in Indonesia at the same price.

"We will look into it together to find the real issue," he said.
