K-Pop World Festival Under Fire for Israeli Participation Amid Genocide in Gaza

11 July 2024 07:05 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSouth Korea's BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) movement denounced the country’s broadcasting company KBS' move to hold a festival and greenlight Israel’s participation during the genocide currently ongoing in Gaza, Palestine.

Israel's participation in the K-Pop World Festival prompted fans around the world to accuse Seoul-based Korean Broadcasting System (KBS) of "artwashing genocide" and sparking a series of boycott calls of the music genre.

Al Jazeera reported that by July 10, Israel had killed at least 38,295 Palestinians including more than 15,000 children with 10,000 remaining missing and leaving 88,241 injured.

Meanwhile, a recent Lancet study estimated that the figure was so much higher at 186,000, including deaths from exposure and illness, or what it called the “indirect deaths.”

K-Pop Fans Decry Israel’s Participation

The hashtags #KpopFestivalOutWithZionism and #NoToArtwashingInKpop trended on social media after the South Korean embassy in Israel promoted its July audition for the K-Pop World Festival.

“The South Korean government & KBS is now complicit in the genocide in Gaza being art washed by allowing Israeli settlers from the settler colony to have a spot in the K-Pop World Festival,” wrote one X (formerly Twitter) user, as quoted from Al Mayadeen on July 11. “Do not remain silent about this. "

Artwashing is the positive use of art and artists to distract or legitimize negative actions, events, or human rights violations. In the case of Israel, the occupation is participating in the K-Pop festival to divert attention from their military atrocities in Gaza.

South Korea’s BDS Movement Called Out KBS

South Korea's BDS movement called out KBS for allowing Israel to participate in the festival while urging their followers on X to file official complaints to the Korean Embassy in Israel and South Korea’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

“The settler colony is trying to artwash apartheid, genocide, and their violations of Palestinian human rights again, as it is a big part of their propaganda strategy,” the user @ARMY4Palestine, an account run by Palestinian fans of the K-Pop group BTS, wrote on X on Tuesday, July 8, 2024.

The K-Pop World Festival is a global event hosted by Korean embassies in each participating country, intended to promote K-pop and South Korea on a global scale. The selected finalists will then attend the final festival in the city of Changwon, South Korea in October.

Israel's Participation in Eurovision

The K-Pop World Festival is not the only event Israel is using to distract from its ongoing massive military campaign in the Gaza Strip. The European song contest was among the first facing boycott calls after approving Israel’s participation and appearance in May this year. Thousands of pro-Palestine demonstrators gathered in the city of Malmo, Sweden, on May 8 to oppose Israel's attendance in Eurovision, which coincided with Eden Golan, the Israeli representative of the contest, rehearsal.

Climate activist Greta Thunberg was among those present at the pro-Palestinian protest, and stressed, as quoted by the BBC, the moral imperative to speak out and take action against Israeli aggression in Gaza.

"If we are tens of thousands of people flooding the streets of Malmo when Eurovision is taking place, saying we will not accept this to continue, then it's a very strong signal – and it does make a difference," Thunberg said.
