3 Must-Avoid Mistakes for Unforgettable Japan Trip

10 July 2024 19:28 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Japan is a captivating destination for tourists with its vibrant cities, serene temples, and delectable cuisine. American travel blogger Grace Cheng, who has fallen in love with Japan after 11 visits since 2017, advises that certain common mistakes can detract from the experience.

Here is a list of three common travel blunders that tourists must avoid for a truly memorable experience, as reported by Insider.

1. Rushing Through Your Itinerary

Japan's diverse offerings, from Tokyo's dazzling energy to Kyoto's tranquil gardens, can be tempting to cram into a single trip. However, Cheng suggests avoiding an overstuffed schedule.

“The ideal time I would give Japan is probably seven to 10 days,” she said.

Rushing through a jam-packed itinerary can lead to stress and make the trip less enjoyable. For short trips, Cheng recommends prioritizing Tokyo as a must-visit destination for all.

2. Sticking to Tokyo

While Tokyo is a must-visit, Cheng opines that it only offers a glimpse of Japan's incredible diversity. Venturing south and north of Tokyo allows travelers to experience Japan's rich history, cuisine, and local charm.

Cheng recommends exploring Sapporo, Hokkaido's northern gem, which offers budget-friendly options, friendly locals, and the iconic soup curry. Osaka, located near Kyoto, is another enticing option, particularly for foodies and lovers of tonkatsu (deep-fried pork cutlet).

3. Fearing Getting Lost

Getting lost can feel daunting, especially in a foreign country. But Cheng argues that it can be a fantastic way to discover hidden gems. “The best way to experience the streets and just get to know the country itself is just to get lost,” she says.

Cheng also recommends ditching phones and Google Maps to venture off the beaten path and discover authentic local eateries and soak in the genuine atmosphere of Japan.
