TEMPO.CO, JakartaBio Farma and Novo Nordisk Indonesia have agreed to collaborate in establishing local manufacturing processes for diabetes medication products in Indonesia.

"This partnership aims to significantly improve access to quality and affordable diabetes treatment, raise awareness about the importance of chronic disease management, and strengthen the Indonesian health system's capacity to address global challenges," said Bio Farma President Director Shadiq Akasya in a written statement after signing the partnership MoU on Tuesday, July 9, 2024.

Sadiq said this collaboration requires government support. "Achieving this goal requires a joint commitment, particularly from the government, to support the production of innovative domestic products," he said.

Vice President and General Manager of Novo Nordisk Indonesia Sreerekha Sreenivasan said this collaboration strengthens the intergovernmental MoU between Indonesia and Denmark.

“At Novo Nordisk, we are guided by our vision to drive change in serious chronic diseases. Improving the lives of people living with diabetes is crucial to delivering on this vision and we strive to provide equitable access to diabetes care," she said in a statement.

In this collaboration, Novo Nordisk brings its expertise to diabetes care and insulin production. Meanwhile, Bio Farma brings its established local manufacturing capabilities to create a stronger and more sustainable foundation for diabetes treatment in Indonesia.

Novo Nordisk has partnered with the government in diabetes training programs for healthcare workers through collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Indonesian Society of Endocrinology (Perkeni), and the Advanced Diabetes Care and Centers of Excellence in Diabetes programs. The program focuses on capacity building of healthcare professionals, patient education, and health evaluation studies in 176 hospitals throughout Indonesia.

Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin said diabetes is the “mother of all diseases.”

“Uncontrolled diabetes will lead to complications. Currently, we are weak in screening, and we need to reform the healthcare system," he said in a written statement.

According to Budi Gunadi, treatment costs will be cheaper if diabetes is identified and treated early. "And it can improve the quality of life for those living with diabetes," he said.

Budi Gunadi explained that 10,000 primary care facilities had been prepared to treat diabetes. “We have reformed 10,000 primary care facilities for better diabetes management care. This collaboration between Novo Nordisk Indonesia and Bio Farma aims to save more Indonesian lives," he said.

Currently, it is estimated that 19.5 million people live with diabetes in Indonesia and the figure is projected to rise to 28.6 million by 2045. As the top 3 leading causes of death in Indonesia, it is critical to have an effective important effective diabetes treatment.
