Qatari Tourist Swept Out to Sea in Nusa Penida, Evacuated to Bali

19 June 2024 08:36 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Denpasar - The Bali Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) managed to evacuate a 30-year-old tourist from Qatar, AAJA, who was swept out to the sea while swimming at Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida. Cakra Negara, the Coordinator of the Nusa Penida SAR Alert Unit, said that the evacuation process took place on Tuesday, June 18, at around 16:30 local time.

The tourist's body was airlifted from Kelingking Beach to the Air Bali helipad at Benoa Harbor. “The evacuation process went smoothly. The victim was then evacuated to the Bali Mandara Denpasar General Hospital,” Cakra said in a written statement, on Wednesday, June 19, as reported by Antara.

The tragic incident was first reported to Basarnas Bali by the head of Kelingking Village. The Qatari tourist was caught in a strong current while swimming with two friends at Kelingking Beach around 13:00 local time. While the two friends survived, AAJA went missing.

Upon receiving the report, the Kelingking Village Head contacted Basarnas Bali at 14:00 WITA, and Cakra promptly dispatched 5 personnel from the Nusa Penida SAR Alert Unit to the location. “He was subsequently found floating,” Cakra said.

The evacuation process was carried out in coordination between the Bali Basarnas and the victim's family and involved a joint SAR team from the Nusa Penida SAR Alert Unit, Indonesian Navy (TNI AL), Klungkung Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD), Nusa Penida Police, Nusa Medika Clinic, and assistance from local residents.
