Indonesian Minister Says Online Gambling Threatens National Resilience

13 June 2024 08:18 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaCoordinating Minister for Human Development and Cultural Affairs Muhadjir Effendy said on Wednesday that aside from threatening public welfare, online gambling is also a threat to national resilience.

Online gambling can now be accessed wherever and whenever, said Muhadjir, making it increasingly dangerous. Most recently, online gambling was allegedly the point of arguments between spouses, both police officers, in Mojokerto, East Java. The quarrel ended with the wife burning her husband to death.

"Online gambling is slowly eroding the energy of our society, people who should be able to work productively end up devoting their minds and energy to playing speculation," he said.

With the lure of the prizes offered and the ease of access, according to Muhadjir, online gambling has become a disease in society. "We are very aware that online gambling is vicious," said Muhadjir.

President Joko Widodo or Jokowi emphasized that the government is serious about eradicating online gambling. “The government is serious about fighting online gambling. The online gambling task force will soon be formed, which we hope will speed up the eradication of online gambling," said Jokowi on Wednesday, June 12, 2024.

Jokowi also warned the public not to play online gambling because the social problems that arise are very complicated.  "It's not just risking money, it's not just a game or fun with prizes, but gambling puts your future at stake," he said.

"Don't gamble either offline or online, it's better to save the money you have or invest it as business capital," added Jokowi.
