Jokowi Claims Air Quality Index in Indonesia's New Capital Almost Twice as Good as Melbourne and Paris

5 June 2024 13:51 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's President Joko Widodo or Jokowi is optimistic that the air quality index in the future capital of Nusantara (IKN) in East Kalimantan will be better than Jakarta. The president even said that the air quality was almost twice as good as that of Melbourne and Paris.

"This morning, I compared the air quality index in Jakarta, Singapore, Melbourne, Paris and Nusantara," the president said in his address at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of Bank BTN building at IKN on Wednesday, June 5.

Jokowi said that the air quality index in Melbourne and Paris each stood at 38 out of good air standards in the range of 0-50. Meanwhile, Singapore's air quality indicator is at 44.

"We haven't measured [the air quality] in Nusantara, but I believe it should be around 20," he said.

Jokowi also compared the air quality in Jakarta during the same period, which reached 176. "In Jakarta, it is very far from that standard. I think not only in Jakarta but also in the [Greater Metro Area]," he said.

Jokowi explained that IKN as a future city concept needs to be supported by ensuring good air quality, including through the operation of electric-powered vehicles. "In addition, only electric vehicles will be allowed in the future. [The level of pollution will be zero because only green energy will be allowed here," he said. "This is the concept of Nusantara in the future."

He also believes that IKN's air quality index can be reduced to zero if conventional vehicles that contribute to local pollution are not allowed to operate.
