TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Seventy-three-year-old British man Geoff Kitchen died of a suspected heart attack on board a Singapore Airlines (SIA) flight which experienced extreme turbulence on Tuesday, May 21. Flight SQ321 was flying from London to Singapore when it suddenly encountered extreme turbulence and had to make an emergency landing at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi International Airport, Thailand.

The British passenger, from Thornbury, near Bristol, southwest England, is believed to have been on the flight with his wife for a six-week vacation in Singapore, Indonesia and Australia.

The Boeing 777-300ER was carrying 211 passengers and 18 crew, including 47 British nationals.

Dozens were also injured in the incident, some critically. Passengers described people being thrown into the plane's ceiling and overhead compartments during the turbulence.

A spokesman for Samitivej Srinakarin Hospital said 71 people needed treatment, including six with serious injuries. But Singapore Airlines appeared to contradict those figures, saying only 30 people were taken to hospital.

In a post on Facebook, the Thornbury Musical Theatre Group paid tribute to Mr. Kitchen: "It is with a heavy heart that we learn of the devastating news of the death of our esteemed colleague and friend Geoff Kitchen in the recent Singapore Air incident.

Bangkok airport chief Kittipong Kittikachorn earlier said the 73-year-old may have died of cardiac arrest.
