TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that another earthquake measuring a magnitude of 5.9 on the Richter scale struck the Banda Sea, Maluku on Friday, November 10, at 10:50 Western Indonesian Time (WIB).
As of 11:00 WIB, the agency recorded 115 aftershocks with the largest magnitude of 6.8 following the powerful 7.2-magnitude quake on November 8 at 11:52:53 WIB.
Daryono, the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, said Friday's quake was triggered by the deformation activity in the seabed of the Banda Sea. “The analysis shows that the quake had a strike-slip motion,” he said on Friday.
The epicenter was located at 5.97 degrees south latitude and 130.21 degrees east longitude, or precisely in the sea, 253 kilometers northwest of Tanimbar, Maluku, and at a depth of 53 kilometers.
The quake caused tremors in the Banda area with an intensity scale of II MMI. Fortunately, it did not have the potential to trigger a tsunami.
Daryono urged people to avoid cracked or damaged buildings caused by the earthquake.
