Jakarta Police Log 43% Increase in Traffic Accidents in 2023

18 September 2023 22:43 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Jaya Police recorded a 43 percent increase in traffic accidents from January to August 2023 compared to the same period in 2022, Deputy Chief Brigadier General Suyudi Ario Seto reported.

“Based on data from January to August 2023, there are 8,254 cases that resulted in 443 deaths,” Suyudi said during a rally at Jakarta Metro Jaya HQ on Monday, September 18, 2023.

From January to August last year, he mentioned, there were 6,707 cases and 452 deaths related to traffic accidents. On this basis, the police were determined to launch Operasi Zebra 2023, a routine traffic operation aimed at preventing accidents through law enforcement.

The traffic operation will be held for 14 days, starting from September 18 to October 1, 2023. Other than the police personnel, members of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and local agencies such as the Transporation Agency and the Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) personnel will also participate in the operation.

“Operasi Zebra 2023 involves 2,939 personnel, consisting of 1,349 Satgasda (regional task force) personnel and 1590 Satgasres (resort task force) personnel,” Suyudi added.

The one-star general issued three orders to the police personnel carrying out the traffic operation. First, to wear a face mask to anticipate the effects of Jakarta's air pollution, to disseminate the emission tests to the public, and to enforce the law justly and honestly while adopting a humanistic approach.
