TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia would attend and participate in the 7th Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival (MACFEST) 2023 in Port Villa, Vanuatu, from July 25 to 30, 2023. This is confirmed by the Directorate General of Culture of the Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology.
Hilmar Farid, the Director General of Culture, explained on Tuesday that Indonesia would present artists and performers from Papua and East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).
“The series of performances by these artists bring a mission of friendship and environmental issues,” Farid said.
Indonesia's presence carries a message of a spirit of togetherness and commitment to cooperation, as well as fostering interactions among Melanesian people in Indonesia and the Pacific countries, especially in the sub-region of Melanesia.
Farid said this aligns with Indonesia's commitment to strengthen ties with Pacific countries through the Pacific Elevation vision.
The Indonesian Cultural Mission team from Papua will perform a song titled Papua Dalam Cinta created by Pay, which was popularized by the Papuan band group Soa Soa and a new song titled "Building a Bridge of Love" created by Steven Wally.
Meanwhile from NTT, the village music group Leisplang from Maumere would showcase traditional music with dance and singing addressing mutual cooperation and environmental issues. One of the songs is titled Gong Waning.
The Cultural Stage in Port Vila would also be enlivened by the dance performance of Kasbi Dance from Papua.
The Director General of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) delivered the 7th Melanesian Arts and Culture Festival invitation to Indonesia during a bilateral meeting with the Indonesian Minister of Foreign Affairs in Bali in December 2022. Vanuatu Deputy Prime Minister also conveyed the same invitation during a working visit to Jakarta last June.
