Demand for Workers in Digital Sector Rising Due to Digitalization: Manpower Ministry

7 July 2023 11:12 WIB

TEMPO.CO, JakartaSecretary General of the Manpower Ministry Anwar Sanusi said digitalization changes the pattern of occupations. He predicted that demand for jobs in certain sectors will be rising and vice versa.

“Jobs that will be in rising demand include jobs close to digital use, such as data analyst and scientist, big data specialist, artificial intelligence and machine learning specialist, digital marketing, and database architect,” Anwar said in a written statement on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

Meanwhile, he added that jobs that may be in low demand are clerical and routine jobs. For example, cashiers, secretaries, data entry, and tellers.

Previously on May 2, 2023, the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) Deputy Chairman Adi Mahfudz said 23 million people are at risk of losing their jobs in 2030 due to technological developments and digitalization.

Kadin had mapped out the types of jobs that may disappear or are low in demand.

“The characteristics [of those jobs] are routine work, have high standardization, can be done with the help of technology, high-risk jobs, and less-flexible jobs," Adi told Tempo on May 2, 2023.

He assessed that efforts to develop new skills and competencies are necessary so that workers could keep abreast of technological developments and the labor market in the future.

The man who currently serves as Kadin’s Deputy Chairperson for Vocational and Certification also appealed to business actors to invest in developing a quality workforce, for example through training, education, and career development.

Kadin also encouraged the industry to identify the types of skills and qualifications needed in the wake of digital transformation and ensure employees possess the latest skills.
