TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim made an impromptu visit to the Chow Kit Market in downtown Kuala Lumpur on Thursday, June 8, 2023.
After holding a one-on-one meeting and witnessing the exchange of memorandum of understanding (MoUs) between the two countries at the Prime Minister's official residence in Seri Perdana in Putrajaya, the two leaders entered the traditional market which is also known as "Little Jakarta", because many Indonesian citizens work and live near the area.
They arrived at Chow Kit Market at around 12:36 hours local time. Wearing shirts with long-sleeved rolled up, they stopped several times to take photos with the vendors there.
The market was crowded as hundreds of Indonesians had gathered since early in the morning. They went hysterical as they met their president.
Jokowi and Anwar then stopped for coffee at Masa Cafe and left at around 13:21 hours local time to head to a restaurant in the Kampung Baru area for lunch.
In the afternoon, President Jokowi was scheduled to attend a tea banquet following the invitation of Malaysia's King Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah before heading to the Bunga Raya Complex to return to Indonesia.
