MK's Election System Decision to Not Affect 2024 Elections, Says KPU

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Any decision of the Constitutional Court (MK) on the election system will not disrupt the stages of the 2024 General Elections in any way, according to the General Elections Commission (KPU).

"God willing, any decision of the court will not interfere with the holding of the 2024 elections," KPU Official Mochammad Afifuddin told journalists in Jakarta on Wednesday.

He also affirmed that the KPU is committed to implementing any decision reached by the court.

Earlier, on Monday (May 29), KPU Chairperson Hasyim Asy'ari also made a similar statement during the event of Administrative Verification of Indonesian Legislative Member Candidates in Jakarta.

On the occasion, Asy'ari also said that the KPU will continue to take the open proportional election system as a reference for preparing ballot papers and other required logistics for the 2024 elections while awaiting the court's decision.

Earlier, the MK had received a request for judicial review of Article 168, paragraph (2) of Law No. 7 of 2017 concerning the open-list proportional representation system for general elections, which was registered with case registration number 114/PUU-XX/2022 on November 14, 2022.

The judicial review was requested by six applicants: Demas Brian Wicaksono (applicant I), Yuwono Pintadi (applicant II), Fahrurrozi (applicant III), Ibnu Rachman Jaya (applicant IV), Riyanto (applicant V), and Nono Marijono (applicant VI).

If the MK approved the judicial review, then Indonesia will adopt the closed-list proportional system in the upcoming general elections in 2024.

Unlike the open-list system, elections in the closed-list system will only allow voters to select their preferred political parties, as the ballot papers will only show them the parties' crests rather than the lists of legislator candidates.

In Indonesia, various parties have been voicing diverse views on their respective preferred election systems. Both the systems have their own supporters.
