TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology held a carnival dubbed 'Merdeka Learning Carnival' at the Zero Kilometer area in Yogyakarta on Sunday night, May 28, as the peak celebration of National Education Day 2023.

"The lively spirit of this activity is expected to be able to inspire and spark all elements of society to develop learning independence which leads to creative creations," said Education Minister Nadiem Anwar Makarim in Yogyakarta during the event.

The carnival carries the philosophy of Ki Hadjar Dewantara's educational trilogy "Handaya Karsa Hambangun Tuladha" which means the momentum of togetherness in the public space. Nadiem hopes that Ki Hadjar Dewantara's philosophy will inspire the next generation to strengthen quality human beings in the future.

In addition, the event aims to grow potential talents through shared artistic experiences as well as educational vehicles for the community. This is in accordance with the theme of the 2023 National Education Day, "Move Together to Liven up Merdeka Learning".

The ministry's Director General of Culture, Hilmar Farid, said that cultural creativity is felt to have contributed to the realization of Merdeka Learning which was initiated by the current government. From culture, the talents, interests, and potential of each person will be born, which is related to the goals of Merdeka Learning, he explained.

"Culture helps shape the profile of Pancasila students. In culture, there is a spirit of togetherness or mutual cooperation that Indonesian students want to create through various Merdeka Learning policies," said Hilmar Farid.

Ignatia Nilu, one of the artists involved in the carnival, said that artists must have the awareness that working in education will have a good impact on the public. "The 2023 Merdeka Learning Carnival is a reflection because there are many artists out there who dedicate their work to public education," he said.

Merdeka Learning Karnival was started from Fort Vrederburg Museum heading to the Zero Kilometer area of the City of Yogyakarta as a cross-cultural icon of the Archipelago and the birth of Indonesia's first city of education.

This activity involved 500 participants consisting of students, the Yogyakarta people, and cultural arts actors from studios and student dormitories.
