Govt to Discuss Coldplay Concert with Ulema, Says Minister

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The government will discuss the pros and cons of permitting a music concert by British band Coldplay with the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI), stated Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno.

"We will establish communication; we would like to hear inputs and suggestions. We need the views from the ulemas to help us ensure that the concert takes place within the legal corridor," Uno told journalists at the Presidential Palace Complex in Jakarta on Monday.

The communication will also be established in the hope of supporting Indonesia's dream of becoming a global tourist destination and promoting its creative economy products to the world, he added.

"This must be prepared properly; all suggestions will be harbored," the minister said.

According to Uno, his ministry is still taking notes and calculating the potential economic added value that may be generated from the concert scheduled on November 15 this year at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in Jakarta.

The Coldplay concert has been included in the framework of 3 thousand events in Indonesia in 2023 that are expected to generate Rp162 trillion (around US$11.02 billion) in income and support efforts to achieve the national target of creating 4.4 million job vacancies, he said.

"I am confident that it (the target) will be achieved," he added.

Recently, a number of groups have warned that they will besiege Soekarno-Hatta International Airport if the concert is held. Regarding the matter, Minister Uno said that he will let the related ministries and agencies handle it.

"That will be handled by related ministries and agencies," he stated.

Earlier, though he did not reject the concert nor prohibit the public from attending it, MUI official Cholil Nafis urged the concert’s promoters to ensure and guarantee that there would be no symbols, remarks, and acts intended to promote LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) behavior during the concert.

The prices of the concert tickets range from Rp800 thousand (around US$54) for the cheapest category to Rp11 million (around US$738) for the "Ultimate Experience" category.

The prices do not include a 15 percent tax, 5 percent service charge, and other additional costs.
