6 Useful Tips on How to Wash and Care for White Clothes

15 May 2023 09:04 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - White clothes require special care. This becomes more complicated when white clothes are stained with sweat, ink and other impurities. Instead of using chemicals or bleach, knowing how to clean stains on colored clothes without bleach is absolutely doable, with the right materials and techniques, of course.

Alex Econs, founder of Everpress and t-shirt printing company ICON Printing and expert on all things t-shirts, shares his six tips for keeping white t-shirts and other laundry fresher and brighter than ever.

1. Wash clothes as soon as possible

The longer a stain remains on clothing, the more difficult it will be to remove. Therefore it is advisable to treat it immediately. “Sweat stains are much harder to remove the longer you leave them on. The best thing to do is wash your t-shirt as soon as possible after wearing it," he says. Try not to let the sweat sit for more than a few days or it will be harder to remove.

2. Treat the stain before washing

You should concentrate your detergent or stain remover on the affected area first before washing the entire garment. "Not only will this save you money by reducing the amount of product used but it will also give the stain time to properly remove before the entire garment is washed," he says.

3. Try natural cleaning solutions

If the garment is still yellow after the initial treatment and washing of the item, try a natural vinegar-based solution first. In addition to bleaching laundry, white vinegar softens fabrics, and helps remove musty and mildew odors. "It will be gentler on clothing as well as the environment," says Alex.

To make a solution at home, mix a half teaspoon of washing powder with a quarter cup of white vinegar and a quarter cup of cold water. Apply this as you would treating an item but this time gently brush over the stained area and then wash the item immediately.

4. Dry them in the sun

According to experts, one of the simplest yet most effective ways to keep white clothes bright is to dry them outdoors whenever possible. “The sun will naturally bleach any discoloration, lighten any stains, and keep the shirt white longer," says Alex. Unless clothes are really white, turn them inside out and limit drying time to a few hours.

5. Soaking the clothes

For stains that won't come off, you may need to soak the clothes. Try using a laundry detergent based solution first which is less risky and less likely to damage any print or pattern. "If this doesn't work, a sodium-based laundry-safe bleach solution may be just what you need to tackle the toughest stains," he says.

Be sure to read the care label on an item of clothing first to ensure you are not using any products that might cause fading prints or faded colors.

6. Prevent stains on clothes in the first place

For t-shirts, for those pesky sweat stains, try switching out your deodorant for an aluminum-free product. “These stains are caused by a chemical reaction between your deodorant and sweat. If you can find a natural deodorant that works for you then you will be able to reduce the amount of washing you have to do," says Alex.
