TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Denpasar Children’s Forum in Bali managed to collect 10,048 cigarette butts within an hour. The actions aimed at reducing the number of child smokers.
“In this event, we’re committed together with the children of Denpasar to reducing the number of child smokers and we also want to educate that smoking can damage the environment and health," said the chairperson of Denpasar Children’s Forum, Komang Nova, on Tuesday, April 25.
About 150 children in the City of Denpasar, Bali, conducted the activity at Lumintang Urban Park. Denpasar Children’s Forum collaborates with a communication forum for Denpasar Junior High School student organizations (Fokom Osis SMP Denpasar), Junior High School students of Denpasar, and volunteers near the location.
This movement was motivated by the high number of children smokers, as well as to commemorate Earth Day on April 22, and Tobacco-free Day on May 31.
"The peak event is on May 31, and starting today until 31st of May 31, we’ll collect cigarette butts. The same activity will also be done on the next day in four districts, namely in East Denpasar, West Denpasar, South Denpasar, and North Denpasar," said Nova.
The Denpasar Children’s Forum chair explained that smoking cigarette is dangerous for health, which is even clearly stated on the pack, as well as polluting the environment. The government has also regulated smoking-free areas in regional regulations number 7/2013.
They regretted the lack of implementation of the regulation and the bad habit of the people who are still smoking in smoking-free areas, such as Lumintang City Park.
"We’ll definitely continuously support and urge Denpasar Administration to be firm for the commitment and ask the people to stop the bad habit of smoking as it poses highly bad impacts to the environment and the children in Denpasar," Nova remarked.
