TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A team from the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) competing in the International Roboboat Competition (IRC) 2023 in Sarasota, Florida, on March 22-28 managed to defend its 1st place title for the fifth time against 24 teams worldwide, including established institutes such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
The ITS team dubbed Barunastra came into this year’s championship with its latest boat named the Nala Proteus and nabbed 1st spot as Grand Champion and 2nd in the Design Documentation.
According to one team member Fariz Rayyan Januar explains that the IRC has two categories with the first being the autonomous and design documentation categories. Design documentation includes design reports, team videos, and online and offline presentations on the team’s strategies in solving its design as well as how the boat was made.
The teams are faced with three stages of the competition with qualifying, semifinals, and finals. “We needed to at least complete three missions to progress from the qualification stage,” said Rayyan as quoted from the ITS website on March 30. "The same scoring system and missions are also applied in the final round, but with a more stringent system.”
The Barunastra ITS team intends to progress to a higher level of competition in the future and aims to participate in the RobotX Competition. This team also managed to garner support from private and state companies such as PT PLN, PT Pertamina Patra Niaga, PT Meratus, PT Airfast Indonesia, PT Harbour Energy, PT PN X, PT Bukit Asam, and PT Petrokimia Gresik
