TEMPO.CO, Tangerang - The Law and Human Rights Ministry’s director general of immigration Silmy Karim on Tuesday called for immigration offices nationwide to adopt a “no-compromise” policy in handling foreign nationals embroiled in legal issues.
He called for officials to constantly and sustainably monitor and conduct operations against problematic tourists. “With assertiveness, precision, but in a civil manner,” he said on March 27.
“If this is done consistently and continuously, it will reduce future cases of troubled foreign nationals who reside in Indonesia,” said the director general who asserted that immigration offices in major cities will follow his orders.
In his statement, he mentioned foreigners who get involved in problems only serve as a burden for the country and his intent to prevent Indonesia from being a transit for international criminals.
The Soekarno-Hatta Airport immigration office’s records show that 224 foreign nationals had been denied entry during the January - March period this year. Many of these people were denied entry and eventually faced deportation.
