TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Police's Cyber Crime Directorate has named AB, the nephew of Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Edward 'Eddy' Omar Sharif Hiariej, as a suspect in the alleged case of defamation.
"We have held a case title, and based on the results we decided to raise the status of the reported person to a suspect," the Police's director of cybercrime, Brig. Gen. Adi Vivid Agustiadi Bachtiar, said on Monday, March 27, 2023.
Deputy Minister Eddy, confirmed that he had filed a police report against his own nephew on the charges of defamation. He said that the report was filed a long time ago.
"I did that in November 2022," the law professor at Yogyakarta's Gadjah Mada University said on Friday, March 24, 2023.
Eddy reported his nephew on the charges of defamation, which is a violation of the ITE Law. Eddy has not spoken much about the case, but have said that he filed the report because AB kept name-dropping him to ask for money from people.
"We suspected that he had been asking money from a number of parties on my behalf," Eddy said when contacted last Friday.
Asked why his nephew allegedly did it, the deputy minister was reluctant to say. He only said that the report was being processed by investigators from the Police's Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim).
