Surabaya Awards Scholarships for Inter-Religious Book Memorizers

21 March 2023 19:44 WIB

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Surabaya City administration announced that it had enrolled 1,339 one-year scholarships for kindergarten, elementary, and junior high school students from different religions who managed to memorize their respective holy books.

Head of the Surabaya Department of Education Yusuf Masruh said that this scholarship is the city’s attempt to strengthen students' religious knowledge.

"We truly appreciate the religious books memorizers from their respective religions, in hopes of making it a habit at schools and their homes," Yusuf said on Sunday, March 19, 2023.

The ceremonial event was led by Surabaya Mayor Eri Cahaydi in front of houses of worship at Surabaya's Royal Residence on Saturday, March 18, 2023.

The scholarship was handed to 120 Catholic students, 257 Christian students, 730 Muslim students, 30 Sishu Dan Wujing students, 38 Buddhist students, and 164 Hindu students.

Yusuf Masruh also acknowledged and thanked the parents and teachers for acknowledging religious education, which he asserted can strengthen interfaith tolerance.
