TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Doctor for the Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI) National Training Center Grace Joselini Corlesa, said that Mohammad Ahsan still needs to undergo further examination following an injury he suffered during the All England 2023 finals on Sunday afternoon, March 19, 2023, Birmingham local time.
"As soon as he arrived in Jakarta, we will follow it up for an MRI examination," Grace said in a written statement published by the PBSI on Monday, March 20, 2023.
The 35 years-old badminton athlete suffered a major injury during his second game of the All England 2023 final against Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Rian Ardianto.
As the game reach match point 14-20, Ahsan performed a move by spinning his body sideways in reflex to avoid the incoming shuttlecock. The move injured Ahsan's left knee and forced him out of the field to receive medical attention.
Doctor Grace had only treated Ahsan after the medal rewarding ceremony. According to Grace, Ahsan's left knee is swelling and basic medical treatment has been provided to prevent the injury from getting worse.
"His left knee is swelling and I cannot conduct further examination right now. The initial treatment was compressing the injury with ice and giving painkillers and anti-inflammation and tapping the injury, and providing crutches," Grace explained.
Grace said that further medical examination for Ahsan will be carried out in Jakarta. Ahsan and his teammate Hendra, both known as "The Daddies" will return to Jakarta on Sunday evening, Birmingham local time.
"Considering that Ahsan is planning to return to Jakarta tonight, we requested for help here [in Birmingham] and at the airport to be provided with a wheelchair," Grace added.
Meanwhile, Ahsan's pair Hendra Setiawan is yet to receive information on his injury.
'I don’t know how bad Ahsan's injury is, but he was trying to bend his left knee and he said it hurts. But we decided to continue because it's already 20 points anyway. If we retired, giving up when you only need one more point certainly does not feel good," Hendra said.
