TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Journalist Safety Committee coordinator Erick Tanjung strongly condemned the cyberattacks launched against the independent journalism initiative Project Multatuli after it published a report related to a sexual crime that occurred in Southeast Sulawesi.
Following the report's publication on March 11, 2023, Project Multatuli's IT team detected suspicious activities breaching their website on March 14, 2023, which continues to take place on the following day. The Project's server suddenly saw a massive influx of access requests that burdened the servers.
Erick said that the cyber attack on Project Multatuli can be classified as a form of violation of the freedom of speech. Erick asserted that such practices would threaten democracy and freedom of the press.
"[The attack] silence criticism and hamper the work of the press, in which its freedom is protected under Law No.40/1999," Erick wrote in a press release on Friday, March 17, 2023.
Erick said that the law clearly stated that there were criminal sanctions for people who hinder journalistic work and that there is no reason for the authorities not to follow up on the cyberattack that was carried out on the Multatuli Project.
